How to make Soy Candles

Making Soy Candles is a fun and healthy hobby.

I start with 100% pure non-toxic soy wax created from soy beans. The wax is white and flakey. To start I decide what color candle I want to make and then select the correct colors to mix together in the wax. Then I use a double boiler to melt the wax to keep from burning it. You only have to heat the wax to a temperature of 150 degrees. This is sufficient to melt it. While it's cooling I measure the size of the containers and choose the right size wick for each container. Using the wrong size wick will cause your candle to either burn too fast if it's too large or to only burn a hole down the center if it's too small. So I always check carefully to make sure the wick is the correct size for the container and then using a double sided sticker place the wick into the center of the container. It's very important not to touch the inside of the container. This will leave your finger print in the glass when the wax hardens. And you will see the print through the glass. Once the temperature of the wax reaches 120 degrees it's time to add the fragrance. MMMMMM. This is my favorite part. My home always smells so wonderful when I'm making candles. Stirring the fragrance in at this degree will ensure a nice smelling candle from top to bottom. Then I dip my fingers in the wax just a little and rub it into my cuticles. Soy wax has Vitamin E in it, so it makes for a wonderful way to soften the cuticles. Once the wax reaches around 100 degrees and starts to look like cream of wheat it's time to pour! Fill the container all the way until it is about 1/4 of an inch from the top of the container. This will keep it from spilling over while burning. Lastly pull the wick straight up and center it. Using a wick stick secure the wick in place. Leave the candle in a nice non breezy place to set up. It takes about 15 minutes to set, but let it set for about 4 hours before burning to ensure a proper burn.
