Waikiki Aquarium

The Waikiki Aquarium opened on March 19, 1904 and is the third oldes aquarium in the United States. It is located in a lovely setting at the ocean fron in Kapiolani Park at 2777 Kalakaua Avenue. It is easy to reach on the #2 bus (the city public transportation, "TheBus"); the bus stop is right in front of the aquarium.

It is open 9:00 am to 4:30 pm daily, except Christmas, and special hours on Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Admission is very reasonable; $9 general; $6. with local or militalry ID, student ID and senior citizens; $4 for persons with disabilities and youth (13 through 17); $2 junior (children 5 through 12); children 4 and under are free. Each admission includes an audio wand for a self-guided tour. I highly recommend taking the wand, although the signs posted at each exhibit are very good at explaining what you're seeing.

The aquarium is not large and you can see everything at a leisurely pace without getting overly tired in about 3 hours. Although the facilities are old, they are very well kept up and the galleries are very well laid out and very attractive. Even the restrooms are large and very nice.

There are wheelchairs available for the use of those who need them.

Some of the sealife you'll see in the aquarium are etherial jelly fishl

You will go back again and again to look at the many colorful reef fish.

You'll see sharks.

And you'll find Nemo, that darling little clownfish.

Whether you're a vistior or a Hawaii resident, the Waikiki Aquarium is well worth a visit and a wonderful way to spend a few hours in Waikiki!
